1. Master your content
When uploading a photo to Instagram ask yourself the following questions:
- Does this image visually represent my brand?
- Does this image speak to my audience?
- Is this image going to emotionally connect with my audience?
- Is this image going to showcase the best version of my work?
If you wouldn’t use the photo you’re about to upload in a Vogue advertisement, then don’t use it at all!
Make sure your content is clear, speaks to your audience and is visually appealing. Keep the more real life and less high quality images for your Instagram stories and make your Instagram feed look like your very own online magazine.
2. Target your hashtags
Keep hashtags as relevant as possible. For example, if you’re a hairdresser in Sydney then don’t use #hair, as you will just blend in with 1 million other photos. Instead be more specific and use more targeted hashtags like #SydneyHairdresser or #SurryHillsHair, to be found by your direct target market.
3. Know your timing
Statistics show that people are way more engaged in the evening when they are winding down, as apposed to during the day when they are at work. Have a think when the best TV shows are airing at night and that’s is the perfect time to upload, as people will be scrolling social media in the ad breaks. The best days to upload to social media are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after 7.30pm – then Friday and Saturday in the early morning between 7am – 8.30am.
4. Find your target audience
So you’ve uploaded your pretty picture with your captivating caption, commented with your very targeted hashtags and still NO NEW FOLLOWERS! #Annoying! It doesn’t stop there, as you have to be very active on social media and put yourself in the right place at the right time. Here is what you need to do next:
- Create a list of Instagram accounts you feel your audience or ideal customer would be following (i.e your competitors)
- Go in and interact with their followers by commenting on their images and creating a connection with them on social media
- Repeat this trick all day, everyday and watch your social media account grow.
5. Use Instagram stories
Instagram stories are a great way to show your customer what you really get up to everyday. You can now add hashtags to your Instagram stories, which means that anyone searching the hashtag will see your story across the top of the page – hello new customers!!
And I know I said only 5 rules but here is another one for you – USE INFLUENCERS! Now that you have your profile down pat and you have great content, what better way to market your brand than to have others talking about it on social media? Offer your services to small and targeted influencers (aka Instagram bloggers) and do this on a regular basis. This is a form of advertising and the more you do it, the more you will get noticed.
